As influential persons in film, politics and world-affairs have managed to prove time and time again, cults of personality are a phenomena not to be taken lightly when it comes to enlarging one’s sphere of influence. Knowing this, then, can allow you as a storyteller to manipulate your audience and allow for increased audience zeal.
(And why you should care)
Although colloquial language would have you treat the two as one and the same, appreciating the subtle distinction between these two entities means gleaning a better understanding of the mechanics at work behind good storytelling (which technically should be referred to as good plotting, but since that sounds kind of evil, storytelling remains my verb of choice).
